Divorce may be stressful for the children

On Behalf of | Mar 25, 2022 | Child Custody

Adults who are going through a divorce may focus on the legal and logistical sides of the split. This involves trying to decide who will live where and who will get what. These matters can become consuming until the divorce is finalized.

Individuals who have children still living at home have to remember that those kids might feel the effects of the situation. The children might not always be able to tell their parents how they’re feeling. The adults will have to watch for signs of stress in their kids

What are some signs of stress in children?

There are many ways that children can show their parents that they’re stressed. In some cases, this comes out as behavioral problems. While this might be disheartening to the parents, addressing the reasons for the stress may help to quell those behavior issues.

Some children will have regressive behaviors, such as an elementary school student who suddenly starts sucking their thumb. Others may be unable to relax or could develop fears that they didn’t have before.

Physical symptoms can also be a sign of stress. If the child starts complaining of any of these, they may be stressed:

  • Headaches
  • Stomachaches
  • Loss of appetite
  • Insomnia
  • Sleeping more often than usual
  • Having nightmares

Anyone who’s going through a divorce should ensure they pay close attention to how the children are faring. Taking the time to get the parenting plan in order is usually a way you can help to minimize their stress. Once the parenting plan is made, they know what to expect from each parent. They can settle into what’s going to be the new normal way of life.
